The department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has a wide range of computerized instrumentation, server clusters, administrative servers, and over 400 desktop machines running an assortment of operating systems. In order to maintain these systems and to keep the department running as efficiently as possible, the department's IT services are handled by the Chemistry and Biochemistry IT Department (ChemIT) team.

We here in the ChemIT team believe that every computer system is valuable and serviceable in some way. We are skilled at working on systems running: Windows 3.11,95,95SE,98,ME,2000,XP,Vista,7 & OS 8,9,X, as well as an assortment of Linux distributions.

We are happy to look at any system you are running and attempt to correct any problems you may have.

ChemIT Help System

In order to expedite any technical problems you may have in the department, we have an online ticket system that will allow you put in trouble tickets that are handled by the ChemIT team.

You can use this code at either of the two copy machines in Chemistry 100.

Scanning and Faxing

Our color copier is able to scan documents and send them to you via email. Simply go to the color copier and enter your copy code. Click the email button, click the “to” button and enter your email address via the on screen keyboard and click done. To start the scan click start and the copier will handle the rest.

University ITS

Information Technology Services at the University of Colorado differ from you local Chemistry IT department because the ChemIT team is a dedicated division strictly for use by Chemistry and Biochemistry Department. ITS at the University level provides email access and network and phone connectivity.

Our department maintains several email lists for different types of members of the department.

Meeting Room Scheduling

In Chemistry and Biochemistry, we have multiple rooms that are available for scheduling meeting, classes, Orals, etc. These rooms are:

ChemStores and ChemPurchasing

The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department has a purchasing department and a chemical/office supply store, known as ChemStores. ChemStores is located in the basement of Cristol Chemistry in room 76. When picking up supplies be sure to fill out an IN (Interdepartmental Invoice) with the items you are purchasing. Tom will be able to help show you how to do this.

ACARD Scanners

In order to process your receipts in the new expense system the department has installed receipt scanners in the following areas:

  • Cristol 60 - Rosemary's Office
  • Cristol 100 - Main Office
  • Cristol 232 - McHenry Administrative Office
  • Cristol 334 - Cech Administration Office
  • Ekeley M149 - General Chemistry Stockroom
  • Ekeley M320 - 3rd Floor Printer room

All of the scanners have instructions above them about how to scan your receipts into the system. From there, your ACARD receipts will be processed by the administration.

Please read the instructions and do not forget to put your name, lab name, and speedtype on the top of the receipt.

Building Service Requests

Please follow the directions below for Building Service Requests.

For more information including what to do in an emergency, please see the Service request policy page [ link ].

  1. For prompt service Faculty, Staff and Students must go to the following link to submit requests for all building service requests: [ link ]
  2. Enter all necessary information on the form: building location, subject, priority level, description of the request and any attachments that may be necessary. Be sure to include room number and a contact name and phone number in the description area.
  3. All requests will be routed to the Building Proctor and Building Manager.
  4. Requests will then be submitted to the Facman (Facilities Management) Service Desk.
  5. Service request numbers will be copied to the requester.
  6. Once service has been preformed and is closed out, the database will be updated to indicate that job closure.
  7. If there are any continual or reoccurring issues related to the service request, those issues must be communicated to the Building Proctor for appropriate follow up with Facman.

Poster Printing - Currenly out of order

Our department has access to an HP Z2100 42inch poster printer.

The poster is able to print posters that have one of their dimensions not exceeding 42 inches.

Procedure for printing a poster

To print a poster simply bring your file to the student workers at the front desk of Cristol Chemistry 100.

You will need to provide the following:

  • A valid speedtype
  • Either a Powerpoint file or an Adobe Acrobat file
  • The type of paper you would like to use

Once this information is received, the poster will be printed as quickly as possible, depending on the printing load and schedules of our student workers.

Software / Site Licenses


We have purchased an academic license of Igor Pro, a very powerful data analysis, programming, and graphing software for use by students on coursework. Igor is the primary tool for data analysis in several groups in the Dept. (e.g. J. Jimenez, Tolbert, Volkamer). You should install IGOR in your computers by downloading it from:

Once you have installed, you should open the online manual (PDF) and go through the "Getting Started in IGOR" section.

The IGOR license is for coursework only for any course in CHEM Dept., so after the end of the semester, those of you joining one of the IGOR-equipped groups should install their licenses. For the rest of you, you can try to convince your advisors to get a license (pretty cheap at $350 or so) or get a personal license ($85 for student personal purchases).


ChemDraw is available to all departments, faculty, staff and students on the Boulder campus, including personal computers. This site license covers the entire CU-Boulder campus with no fee to the individual users.
